A Journey of Growth and Creativity
The best thing that has come from my time with the ZV-1 isn’t just great footage—it’s my personal growth. This little camera has been a great introduction to videography for me. I’ve learnt so much in such a short period of time and feel like I’m now able to consider moving on to something a little more advanced. This doesn’t mean I’ll ever part ways with this camera as it still holds so much value in its size and level of quality.
As a person currently seeking to improve my videography and cinematic skills I’m considering moving towards the Sony ZV-E1 or possibly the Sony FX30. These are however a big step up in terms of functionality and learning the world of lens types so I’m going to stick with the ZV-1 for a little longer, at least until I’ve mastered it and saved a little more money.
Unlocking Stability with a Gimbal
One of the first hurdles I faced was stabilisation. Handheld footage wasn’t smooth enough, and even with active stabilisation, the image cropped in too much. The solution? A gimbal. After researching, I found the Zhiyun Crane M2S gimbal, which worked perfectly with my ZV-1.
Suddenly, my footage transformed into smooth, cinematic shots. If you’re considering a must-have accessory for the ZV-1, I’d highly recommend investing in a gimbal.

Enhancing Image Quality with Picture Profiles
Straight out of the box, I wasn’t overly excited about the image quality. So, I dove into the picture profile settings and created my own custom profile. You can’t easily see the different profiles on the small LCD screen so this took some time filming and playing back on my PC to find the perfect style. Over time, this simple tweak gave my footage richer colours, more natural skin tones, and a professional look that rivalled my brother’s full-frame Sony A7RV.
I love picture profile 10 on this camera and most of my shots will be taken with this setting in 4K.
Solving the Battery Life Issue
Battery life was another major drawback. Shooting in 4K drained the ZV-1 quickly, giving me only about 50 minutes of usage. I found the best solution was to carry extra batteries. I found affordable third-party batteries that lasted 10-15% longer than the factory ones, ensuring I never ran out of power during a shoot.

The only issue was that each time I had to swap the battery, I had to remove the camera from the gimbal and reattach it. Luckily the Zhiyun Crane M2S has a quick release attachment.
Love the Macro Setting
For those with a passion for close-up photography the built-in macro mode allows you to quickly get some amazing close-ups of your desired scene. I love this feature for any B roll footage in my films and also love the stills capability which you can see here.

Despite its minor frustrations, the Sony ZV-1 is a powerhouse in a compact form. It has allowed me to produce professional-looking footage, expand my creative abilities, and become a better problem solver. While I dream of a future version with even more refinements, I wouldn’t trade the experience and growth this camera has given me.
